Deputy James “Jimmy” Billups Trevathan
Born April 9, 1925
Deputy Trevathan was sworn as a Deputy with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office on December 3, 1962.
On June 3, 1963 Deputy Trevathan attempted to stop a suspect vehicle from a hit and run accident that had just occurred. Deputy initiated a traffic stop which lead to a pursuit. The pursuit ended on Lovers Lane in the Flatrock Community of Surry County.
The driver of the suspect vehicle exited his vehicle and shot Deputy Trevathan twice.
Despite being mortally wounded Deputy Trevathan returned fire striking the suspect once, paralyzing him.
Deputy Trevathan left behind a wife and three small children.
In John 15:13 Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
